Hong Kong and Nigeria Sign Comprehensive Double Taxation Agreement

Monday, 20 July 2026

On 13 July 2026, the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Mr. Christopher Hui, signed a Comprehensive Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement (CDTA) with Nigeria during an online bilateral meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Mr Taiwo Oyedele.

This marks Hong Kong’s 59th CDTA and the fourth concluded in 2026.

The agreement allocates taxing rights between the two jurisdictions and provides tax credit relief to avoid double taxation. Nigeria’s withholding tax rates on dividends and interest for Hong Kong residents, and on royalties for Hong Kong companies, will be reduced from 10% to 7.5%.

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the continent’s third-largest economy. As a Belt and Road participant and an important African trading partner of Hong Kong and Mainland China, the agreement is expected to enhance tax certainty and strengthen bilateral trade and investment ties.
